Miley Cyrus‘ new album Can’t Be Tamed came out the same week as Eminem‘s new album Recovery. But while Eminem is on his way to having the best-selling record of the year, Miley is nowhere near the numbers she’s used to. Her album sold only 106,553 copies in its first week. A strong showing for most artists, but far below what Miley’s previous album moved.

Critics were all over the board when they reviewed Miley’s album. Rolling Stone said, “It’s a Top 40 record of a high order, packed with electro-pop hooks and big Kelly Clarkson-style shout-along choruses. Cyrus’ 17-year-old ire–however genuine it is–just adds spice.”

The Guardian on the other hand isn’t Miley’s biggest fan. They said, “It’s hard to escape the feeling that, in seeking to establish a more individual identity, Cyrus has become more generic.” Miley growing up so fast may have pushed away her tween followers, who now have their eyes on Justin Bieber. While many fans admire her new independent, and sluttier, streak, other fans might feel alienated by her rapid identity change.

And Entertainment Weekly doesn’t even think she can pull off her new bad girl image. “Despite her best rebellious efforts, Miley’s just not (yet) that thorny a girl.” Miley uses Poison’s “Every Rose Has Its Thorns” in one of her songs, but unfortunatley the thorns were too sharp for Miley this time around. Entertainment Weekly gave this album a B- and gave Eminem a B+ because he had some “merit” to his album.
